One year ago today, North Shore Mama was born! It’s a special occasion for me and my little pet project!

When I first started this blog, I kind of knew about blogs a little bit.  I really thought they were mostly used by people when they were traveling, so that all of us back home could read their stories and wish we were away on adventures somewhere hot and exotic.  My brother had a blog chronicling his life as a professional hockey player and I had some friends who also seemed to use their blog as more of an online ‘diary’.  I was fairly oblivious to the fact that there were all these amazing food, parenting, DIY, wedding, photography, technology, etc. blogs out there, until I started my own blog and dove into The Wonderful World of Blogging head first.

Blogging truly is its own little community, or subculture.  Bloggers befriend other bloggers, sometimes based solely on the fact that they like each others’ blogs.  There are events to bring bloggers together online and in person.  As a blogger, you will likely take the time to spread blog love by commenting on other bloggers’ posts, as a way of encouraging a blogger you like to keep writing what they write.  There are blog trains, blog link-ups, blog workshops, blogger conferences, blog discussion groups, blogger awards, and blogging circles. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.  I have to admit, that I still find it to be slightly overwhelming and don’t ever feel that I am keeping up fast enough with this special world, but I enjoy the learning opportunities that are presented to me!

Learning about everything “blog” is a full-time fascination of mine.  I love learning how to better my own blog, I love discovering new blogs, I love reading my RSS feed of my already-favourite blogs… I love it all!

When I first started this blog, I had no idea if anyone would even be interested in reading it.  I decided from day 1 that posting in this space would have to be something I genuinely enjoy because it does take a lot of time and it is always a learning experience.  I told myself that the moment I stopped enjoying writing here, I would be OK with shutting ‘er down and chalking it all up to giving something new a solid effort.

As every day, week, month goes by, I recognize that this blog is so much more to me than just a play space or somewhere I reach out to those in my community.  This blog has been what has been missing from my life for quite some time.

An outlet.

A place of expression and reflection. A place I look forward to visiting and where I often wish I had more time to hang out. A place that has allowed me to be free and honest and happy and creative.  A place that I have to myself, where I can go to and be alone, even with a house full of my little family.  It gives me that ‘me time’ that I don’t seem to find (yet) in other ways and it gives me the chance to connect with others at every hour of the day, whenever they are ready to tune in and whenever I feel comfortable being ‘seen’.

North Shore Mama is now being seen by anywhere from 1000-3000 people every month! That is so cool! I would have never dreamed that that many people would come by and play with me here every month! It is humbling and I truly appreciate all the visitors, comments and engagement from everyone! Thank you!

For fun, I thought I would do a little trip down North Shore Mama memory lane and highlight some of my favourite blog moments over the past year.

So… here we go… (click on the links if you would like to see which posts I am referring to :) )…

My very first post.

My most viewed post over the past year. Go figure!

Being voted one of Vancouver’s Top 30 Mom Bloggers and then ending up in the top 4!

My personal favourite post.

A shout-out from a childhood hero about my favourite post!

The birth of our second baby girl.

Making the Top 10 list of Hill & Knowlton’s Top Canadian Mom Bloggers to Follow.

There are many other things that have been gifted to me through writing this blog. I have had the opportunity to connect with local companies to help promote their products or events, I have engaged with North Vancouverites/Vancouverites/Canadians, whom I would have maybe never met otherwise, through Facebook and Twitter, and irreplaceable friendships with fellow bloggers have gone from online to offline. I have had the chance to share with family, friends and readers special family moments.  And, maybe most importantly, I have been having so much fun! Thank you to everyone who reads what I take the time to write! Here’s to another great year!

North Shore Mama

Jessica Blumel

Nice to meet you! I'm Jessica a.k.a North Shore Mama. This site was born out of my love for my daughters and the desire to share my motherhood journey with fellow moms. I believe we're all in this craziness called 'parenthood' together and North Shore Mama is my way of reaching out to anyone who needs a laugh, a cry or dinner inspiration. Thank you so much for reading!

Congratulations on being 1. And thankyou – I had been making a poor attempt at maintaining a calendar of activities of my own. And now that I have found yours, I no longer need to. Please keep up the great work.

Happy one year Anniversary North Shore Mama!
Your proud Mama has so enjoyed reading all your posts.
Thank-you for searching out all the great events, places to go, products, projects and experiences for all of us
North Shore Grand Mamas to take our grandchildren to.
I’m continuing to discover what a dedicated and loving mom you are, so caring and innovative, always seeking to find some sun on a rainy day and adventure on any given day and sharing it with others.

It was heart warming to read the message from Raffi. I too, believe that you are already that Mom you strive to be.
PS Did I tell you that I met Raffi this summer on Salt Spring Island. I just had to tell him that we listened to, and sang along to his songs for at least 12 years straight and never tired of his fun and lively lyrics. (your favourite was baby beluga)

one more thing……thank-you for becoming a Mama, your children are the best gift ever!
