Last night, as I was cuddled up all warm and cozy with my husband on our couch, I came across an article about a North Vancouver mom, Erika Harris who is in DESPERATE need of a Bone Marrow Transplant.
Erika and her husband have 2 young children aged 2 and 5 years old. Less than a month ago, Erika was diagnosed with acute mylogenous leukemia which meant that chemotherapy was needed instantly if there was any hope of ridding her bone marrow of the Leukemia cells so that new and healthy cells could regrow!
After the first round of chemotherapy, the Harris family found out last week that the treatment had been unsuccessful and Erika is now considered “high-risk”, meaning that she will need more intensive chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant in order to stay alive.
It saddened me so deeply to think that Erika’s children might not have their mommy to hold them when they’re sad, laugh with them when they’re happy, and hold their hand as they walk through their classroom door on their first day of school.
Erika’s story impacted me more profoundly than I could imagine. Not only does she live right here, 10 minutes from the comfy couch I was sprawled on, but she has children! Two little kidlets! And children deserve to have their mommies. Erika’s children deserve their mommy! I’m not living in a bubble. I realise that there are many others in the world in need of all sorts of medical help and treatments. Sometimes it just takes a story like Erika’s to wake us up and encourage us to get out there and do something… especially when all it takes is a few minutes online at onematch.ca.
Erika needs a MATCH. Right away! A match means that there is someone out there that has inherited genetic markers called Human Leukocyte Antigens (HLA) that are compatible with Erika’s. And her match could be YOU!
I am not sure I have ever been so sure of something in my life as I was about registering to become an OneMatch donor last night.
I hope you will consider signing up to be a stem cell donor. For Erika. For Erika’s family. For the tens of thousands of people around the world that are also waiting for their match.
