Our bodies hold onto toxins in our livers, fats cells, skin and hair. The body is bombarded with toxins every day, some we can control the ingestion (nicotine, alcohol, drugs, poor foods laden with additives) and some that we can’t control such as environmental factors like pollution. The body is constantly in a state of detoxification, so help it out by adding some of these detoxifying foods to your diet to ease the burden on your detoxifying organs like the liver.

Many people think detox and go for a juice cleanse, or an extreme detox regime to get started. By choosing whole natural foods, reducing or working to eliminate processed foods and omitting lifestyle choices that harm the body, you will already be detoxifying your body and feeling better. I also must note that when a person detoxifies their body, the first few days may feel worse than when you started. This is due to something called a “healing crisis”. This occurs when you have just started a detox and toxins that have been held in the body are being released into the bloodstream for elimination. This period can vary for all individuals based on the length of time between cleanses, how clean the diet is regularly, and amount of toxic materials that are in the body.

These foods can be easily added to salads, smoothies, juices and all kinds of meals.

Beets

Beets fight infection, purify blood and help detox the liver. They also help boost the body’s cellular intake of oxygen, helping to cleanse the entire body.

Cabbage

Cabbage contains many antioxidant and anti-cancer compounds. Cruciferous vegetables (like cabbage, broccoli, and kale) are powerful detoxifiers and neutralize damaging compounds found in cigarette smoke. They also help the liver produce adequate amounts of enzymes for detoxifying.

Flax seeds (or flax oil)

Flax seeds contain a good amount of Omega 3 fatty acids that play a huge roll in brain function. They are also essential for maintaining a healthy immune system and aid in cleansing functions.

Lemons

Lemons are full of antioxidants in the form of Vitamin C, and they are also powerful liver detoxifiers. Squeeze ¼ of an organic lemon into a class of water in the morning to kick start your daily detox. Add lemon to your water during the day to keep it going.

Seaweeds

Seaweeds are a great way to get a slew of minerals and trace minerals into your diet. They also bind to radioactive compounds and heavy metals in the body and assist in elimination of toxins. Add seaweeds to rice while cooking, or snack on them throughout the day.
