‘Tis the season!!! ‘TIS!!! The kids are out of school, there’s snow on the ground from Canadian coast to Canadian coast, and it’s downright time for a little break!
Christmas is a big deal for our family. It was such a special time for my brother and I growing up and I love it even more (if that’s possible) now that I have my own kids! Portia and Madeleine (ages 6 and 3.5) now fully understand this time of year and we’ve been enjoying all-things Christmas for the past few weeks.
Portia has taken an interest in photography as of late, and always wants to use my phone to take pictures. While I do allow this sometimes, other times I am either using my phone myself or I’m concerned about said phone losing its life (or at the very last, its screen!). So, I thought it would be so fun for her to learn some of the basics of photography with her own camera. The other night, we spent some time working on setting up and framing her pictures, with the theme of ‘all-things Christmas’. It was so much fun. Portia used her new Instax Mini 8 (on sale HERE) which was great because she got to have immediate and tangible photos. We were able to talk about lighting and angles based on her previous shots. It was such a nice little evening together.
Portia loved watching the ‘magic’ pictures appear!
She got right into the ‘flat lay’ concept. I guess she sees me taking pictures way more often than I knew! She even made me hold objects (as seen below) and I was instructed to ‘hold still, mommy’. Haha.
Our house has pretty poor lighting and it was nighttime, so a lot of the shots are darker, but it was such a fun way to spend some one-on-one time together. I’m putting another box of film into her stocking and plan on having another Portia-mommy date to take some pictures together. This time, we’ll do it during daylight and outdoors
At this time of making memories, it’s also a time to surprise our loved ones with some goodies under the tree.
