Living a more sustainable life sometimes feels like a huge undertaking. My thoughts automatically go in the direction of : ‘stop buying anything and everything’, while at the same time ‘don’t create waste’, and simultaneously ‘walk everywhere and eat vegan’. Pretty much… just overhaul your whole life, Jessica.
But that is not realistic. Not for me. Not for where I live and where I am at in this stage of my life. I can’t go full out and, if I’m being honest, it wouldn’t make me happy. I do, however, know there are a few key things I could be doing to leave less of a mess on this beautiful Earth of ours and even these small lifestyle changes can have a massive impact.
Lucky for me, some of these changes can be brought about with the help of technology. I love technology because it usually means that a task is being accomplished with not a lot of manual effort. Live a more sustainable life, while not having to turn my world upside down? Done and done!
Today, we’re seeing basic functionality like controlling lighting or thermostats from our smartphones, but soon, innovations like biometric security systems, intelligent kitchens and home health solutions will make our lives so much safer, healthier and easier that smart home technology will become integral to our digital lifestyles.

I’m starting my quest for a more sustainable lifestyle by installing the Nest Thermostat. I am notorious for cranking the heat in my house. I know it’s bad. I slap my own hand as I click the UP button. The problem in our older house is that the heat never really seems to be quite right. I’m constantly adjusting the thermostat. Once we get our Nest Thermostat up and running this weekend, it will be doing that adjusting FOR ME! I think I have a new best friend!
I can’t tell you how often I rush out of the house in the morning, two kidelts in tow, jump in the car, drive away and as I’m nearing their school, wonder whether I turned off all the lights at the house. Ok, I CAN tell you. It happens all the time!!! I know I am not alone on this one. (Right? RIGHT?). Guess what? There’s an APP FOR THAT!! Well, there are smart lightbulbs that are controlled by an app (for that). 😉
The Phillips Hue Lighting system is so cool. You can control the lighting in your house from your phone, wherever you may be. (In my case, I’ll be in the school drop-off line in my car).
It seems that as individuals, we are all working a little harder at becoming more responsible when it comes to energy use in our homes. Brands big and small are also taking steps to more sustainable workspaces, products and services. A leader in this movement is TELUS.
Downtown Vancouver’s TELUS Garden was awarded LEED Platinum certification by The Canada Green Building Council. It’s the highest rating a building development can receive, and has set an exciting and important precedent for the way we view our cities’ futures.
TELUS just released their 2015 Sustainability Report (read it here)! In their report, it is made very clear that their efforts have been focussed on the environment, Canada’s communities and our lovely Mother Earth as a whole.
If we all do our share, we can continue to enjoy this beautiful planet we call home.
