Last week, Portia completed a weeklong bike camp with Escape Adventures in North Vancouver. Spoiler alert: She went from NOT being able to ride a bike to RIDING her bike… ON. HER. OWN.
Brian and I have tried to help her get up and running on her bike (without training wheels) but we have not been successful. I think Portia expects a certain level of security with us, meaning she hasn’t wanted us to let go of her bike. If we did try and ‘set her free’, she would get very upset with us for letting go and super frustrated. It never really ended very well.
But NOW!!! Now we can spend our sunny days and longer evenings this summer out riding around on our bikes/scooters. So exciting!
Here are 3 really quick videos to show Portia’s progression at camp!
Escape Adventures offers many camps for all age groups. The one we had Portia in (age 4.5 years and, at the time, unable to ride without training wheels) was Mini Rippers and something we really loved was that there was 1 instructor for every 3 kids. Our instructors were AMAZING with the kids. I had a few conversations with other parents in Portia’s group who were equally as impressed with the patience and dedication of our instructors. It’s hard teaching 1 child how to ride a bike, let alone 3, but they did such an amazing job! As you can see by the series of videos, Portia was even going down hills and braking by the last day of camp. So cool!
Learning how to ride a bike is about so much more than just being able to ride a bike. It is a great confidence boost for our wee ones and a skill they will carry forward with them in life. I have friends that learned to ride a bike in their 30’s! That’s a lot of bike rides missed out on!
We are really looking forward to all the riding we’ll be able to do and highly recommend this camp for whatever level of rider your kidlet is. Apparently the trail riding classes are just the greatest!
