Lately our morning and bedtime routines have been quite the challenge. Portia used to let us undress her, dress her, brush her teeth, get her jacket on etc. without even noticing what was going on. Now that she is a toddler in her “terrific two’s”, these (once-easy) routines are sometimes a full on battle while trying to get out the door in the morning and get ready for bed at night.
I wanted to find a way of eliminating the struggle and decided to try and make getting ready more of a game. I started searching the www for some ideas and saw all sorts of calendar and schedule ideas which inspired me to create my own for Portia (AND Brian and I!).
I made a motivation chart that can be used interchangeably for getting ready in the morning and for winding down at night.
I kept the chart very simple so that Portia would know exactly what each icon represented and that all it takes is to complete a ‘task’ before you can move it from the TO DO column to the DONE column. Portia likes to un-stick the little images and re-stick them and they often get moved back and forth a few times just for fun.
Seeing as this was just a trial, I didn’t go so far as to laminate the images or the chart itself, but I would suggest using cardstock to print your tasks onto or to take the time to laminate them, as they do get a ton of use. I will probably end up having to remake the little task squares, which I am happy to do if Portia stays motivated to use the chart! To stick the tasks to the board, I used little velcro dots from Michaels and they seem to be working really well.
I’d love to hear from you… Do you use a motivation chart or another way of encouraging your toddler to get ready in the morning and/or at night?
