Memories, old and new Memories, old and new
I feel very lucky to have had the childhood I did. I come from a very loving extended family and my brother and I... Memories, old and new

I feel very lucky to have had the childhood I did. I come from a very loving extended family and my brother and I were always very close with each other and with my parents.  We have so many happy memories of school, weekends at home and away, long summer days and lots of play time.

Some of my most cherished memories of childhood were spent with my grandma and grandpa (Oma and Opa).  They lived a few blocks away from our elementary school and my Oma would often pick my brother and I up at the end of the day for a visit at their house.  We would watch Full House, play cards and eat homemade cookies.  My Oma was the best baker! She made traditional German cookies and we ate them alongside a tall glass of ice cold milk.

Milk and cookies.  There’s a reason that’s ‘a thing‘.  I can’t think of a better pairing of food and drink.  Nothing as nostalgic, that’s for sure.

I love reliving old memories and creating new ones with my own kids.  I love the milk & cookies memory, but I am not a baker (and neither is my mom!), so we need something new to start up.

I’ve partnered with Dairyland in celebration of their 100th anniversary to create some lasting memories with my girls. There may not be any baked treats around here, but there can be some other delicious goodies!

Dairyland’s delivery service has changed over the years (hint: no more horse and wagon). What hasn’t changed is our commitment to delivering products of the highest quality.

Enter the Milk ‘n’ Cookies Milkshake.  This super easy recipe combines Vanilla Ice Cream, Dairyland Milk, a splash of vanilla and Oreo cookies.  It is dangerously delicious and your kids will love everything from making these to drinking them.  Trust me!

Milk ‘n’ Cookies Milkshake

Ingredients

  • 2 cups vanilla ice cream
  • 1 cup Dairyland milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup crushed oreo cookies

Method

Blend all ingredients in a blender.  Sip + enjoy!

I got to be one of the kids at our small elementary school that got to deliver the milk to each classroom just before lunch to those that had ordered it. Loved getting to leave the classroom for the 1/2 hours or so it took me to complete the task!

My best milk memory is when I was about 5 or so. I remember my mom giving my brother and I a glass of milk each while we were sat at the table. We would blow bubbles in the milk and it would make my mom SO mad. My brother and I use to laugh so much doing it. It is a great memory I have of my brother also. 😉

One of my greatest milk memories is coming home from school with my younger sister and having our after school snack which was usually milk and cookies! I just loved dipping my chocolate chip cookies into the milk! I still do that to this day! I was so excited to get off that school bus at the end of the day!

With 4 kids there are a lot of milk memories at my house (and a lot of milk drinking) From cookies and milk after school with my big kids, milk shakes in the summer, a big glass of milk with chocolate birthday cake or cuddling the littlest one in with a warm bottle of milk. Milk is something that is a part of our everyday lives and a part of so many special memories.

My favorite milk memory is when milk got delivered to your door in bags! We always waited so patiently for that weekly delivery. I fondly remember carrying these bags upstairs and at the time I remember thinking they were the heaviest things in the world but I couldn’t wait to have a glass so I carried each and everyone of those milk bags up the stairs and waited patiently for a fresh glass a that satisfying delicious family staple we all know as milk!

I remember when the Dairyland home delivery truck would deliver milk to our house. I was so excited to see what my parents had ordered. I especially liked the small yogurts, with the green foil lids. Even now from time to time I see a Dairyland truck driving around our neighbourhood making deliveries.

I’m not a huge milk drinker. The only memory I have that contained milk is when I ate cereal at night with my dad when I was a kid. It’s a memory I will always remember down to the alphabits cereal. My son who is 3 now loves milk. We have to watch him as in the course of 2 days he drank 4L! I also thought it was super cute the other day he had a pig “drink” milk from the cow when playing.

I remember having the milk man deliver our milk each week and the 1 litre glass bottles that the milk came in with foil tops. The next week I would put the empty bottles in a milk crate and he would take them and leave me fresh ones. Believe it or not, this was as recently as 1995 when my oldest son was a baby and we were living in Victoria BC. I’m born/raised Calgarian, and currently we go through about 6 of the 4 litre Dairyland milk jugs each and every week. We love our milk! Thanks for the chance.

I attended an elementary school that served a carton of Dairyland Milk with lunch almost everyday. I’m a picky eater so I didn’t even touch the lunch most of the time, but I became friends with one of the new kids in my class and we bonded over being picky eaters. We had mini competitions to see who can finish our lunch first – even if we didn’t like it. We soon learned to appreciate the goodness of milk and we looked forward to it at lunch.

I thought I was such a BIG girl because my mom trusted me with a whole two dollars (this is dating me).
Also, I returned in a timely manner. My mom was so pleased with the speed with which I returned and
the change from the milk purchase. Also, we made oatmeal raisin cookies together. She used the stove and I made my little cookies on my shiny and new amazing miniature COOKING STOVE. After they where baked with shared our cookies with my big brother (who is passed away now) with a tall cold glass of Dairyland milk. Thanks, for letting me remember this memory the I cherished to this day.
