It’s summertime! YAHOO!  Summer means a few things to me: sunshine, flip flops, watermelon, swimming and road trips (to name a few).

Last weekend we went on a mini staycation to Harrison Hotsprings (post yet to come!). We had such an amazing time and the drive was so easy from North Vancouver.  We hit some traffic heading there on the Friday but the drive home was about an hour and a half.  No biggie!  While we didn’t find the kiddies needed too much entertaining, the road trip we’ll be taking in a couple of weeks will need take a little more preparation and creativity to keep the kidlets happy in the back seat.

Here are some ideas I’ve been collecting that I plan on putting into use for our long(er) drives coming up.

Cookie Sheet Magnetic Boards

Magnetic board

This is an activity that both Madeleine (16 months) and Portia (3.5 years) will both love. There are so many ways of changing this up by using different magnets and it’s so easy to make.  From: Happy Go Lucky Blog

While this may be a little advanced for Madeleine, Portia would be all over this dress-up game.  From: Kix

Portable Activity Kits

If I have the time (and patience), replicating Mama Papa Bubba’s Activity Kit would be the ideal for this upcoming trip.  Both the girls would be into these games and activities. From: Mama Papa Bubba Blog

This felt “quiet book” is such a great idea as well! It can be as complex or as simple as you wish.  From: The Quiet Book Blog

Easily Accessible Snacks

Veggies in a jar

I’ve seen many varieties of this snack, but the jist is… throw a dip in the bottom of a mason jar (peanut butter, hummus, ranch etc.) and then throw your veggies sticks right in there too.  Love this idea! From: The Kitchn

We are also huge fans of the GoGo Bags snack bags which I recently reviewed.

This is a wee snacker’s heaven and is sure to entertain.  Grab a tackle box and fill each compartment with a different nibbly.  Trail mix, dried fruit, nuts, crackers and whatever else your little snackers’ heart desires. From: Tip Junkie

When it’s time to bring out the big guns, we will sometimes offer a little treat during a car ride.  Kinder Surprise eggs are a great choice because once the chocolately goodness is in their tummy, the kids also get a new little toy to play with.  Win Win!  Kinder Surprise Eggs

Wherever your summer travels may take you, I wish you a bon voyage!
