I’m a Blogger. What exactly do I DO? I’m a Blogger. What exactly do I DO?

I have been a blogger for over 4 and a half years now and it has been quite the ride. NorthShoreMama.ca started as nothing more than a calendar that parents on the North Shore could access to see what they could do with their kids on any given day.  A mama wakes up on a rainy Tuesday and wants to get out of the house with her 18 month old… but what to do, where to go?  Enter the North Shore Mama calendar which included activities from all the local libraries, recreation centres, play gyms etc. and all the times these programs were running.  I selfishly created it for MYSELF, because I was collecting every brochure from every play gym and I didn’t love the look of papers strewn across my desk anymore.  I wanted it all online and easy to see.

Every once and a while, I would write a post on my blog about an experience Portia and I had had at one of our activities.  That writing got my long dormant creative juices flowing again and I remembered how much I loved to write.  I started writing more editorial pieces about life and motherhood and 3 months into the life of my site, I was fortunate to have been brought into the VancouverMom.ca Top 30 Mom Blogger fold.  North Shore Mama ended up in the top 4 blogs for 2012 and this launched my blog into a whole new dimension.

I started getting emails from brands and PR firms asking me how much I charge for advertising on my site and, right then and there, I decided to embrace the opportunity of turning my passion project into a full-fledged business.  I attended conferences, I read article after article, I hired a coach to help point me in the right direction (and help me figure out the difference between a sponsored post and an advertorial 😛 ).  I soaked up any bit of advice and insight I could, to be able to give my all.

So, I’m a blogger then- what does that even mean?  I get asked this so often, and I think blogging as a career is still new enough that people genuinely wonder how it all works. What do I DO as a living, to earn my primary income? Well…

I’m a writer, photographer, photo editor, advertiser, connector, socializer, event-attender, researcher, brand rep’er, ambassador, supporter, engager, networker, dreamer, social media obsessor, influencer, planner, idea creator, negotiator, hashtagger (and new word inventor?).

The writing part aside, I have pretty much had to learn all sorts of areas of different trades, businesses and fields, to give this whole blogging thing a go.  Am I an expert at any one of those things listed above?  Nope.  Just like you can be a dog owner and not a dog expert.  Just like I am a parent and far from a parenting expert.  But part of what I LOVE about being a blogger is that I am literally learning something new every single day.  My brain is on constant overload and it makes me happy.

My days usually consist of writing posts, whether personal or in partnership with a brand and a campaign they’re working on.  I do a lot of emailing and meetings in person to create and foster those partnerships.  I share my own content and other content that resonates with me on all my social channels and I work on growing an authentic audience.  I work essentially a 9-5 day, which often runs right through to midnight interspersed with being a mother to two young girls.  It’s busy, it’s challenging, I struggle to keep up and I love every minute of it.

Nice to meet you! I'm Jessica a.k.a North Shore Mama. This site was born out of my love for my daughters and the desire to share my motherhood journey with fellow moms. I believe we're all in this craziness called 'parenthood' together and North Shore Mama is my way of reaching out to anyone who needs a laugh, a cry or dinner inspiration. Thank you so much for reading!

Yeeeessss! I am sharing this post with everyone who asks me “so what do you really do?” And I love all the titles you wrote down, because being a blogger has SO many subtitles. Nicely done!

Being a blogger is so much more than just writing! You’re absolutely correct in that! I’m still learning what I need to do to be successful
