Wow!  Like… WOW.  That is what I have to say about Cirque du Soleil’s TORUK that I saw in Vancouver last week!  I brought my mom and Portia and we all sat there pretty much awe-struck.  I hope you all had a chance to see it while the show was here in Vancouver, and if not… add it to your bucket list for another time and place!  (Note: the show moves on to Edmonton next and will be in Las Vegas in the New Year as well!)

TORUK was so much different than the other Cirque du Soleil performances that I have seen in the past.  I was expecting more death-defying acts and rings of fire and leaps through the air at heights that make me uneasy.  TORUK though… it was so much more about the visuals— the incredible visuals and the storyline.

Based on James Cameron’s Avatar, TORUK transports us to another world, one where a language is spoken that we would never be able to comprehend and where the scenes are truly captivating.  It was hard to take it all in all at once!

It was so unbelievable to watch the stage transforming the way that it did.  I heard little gasps and “wow’s” from Portia and was happy I had decided to take her, even though I wondered if it was too much for a 6 year old.  I’m not sure I would have taken her even a year ago, but she really enjoyed it at this age!

Inspired by James Cameron’s Avatar, Cirque du Soleil transports you to the world of Pandora in a visually stunning live setting. Experience a storytelling odyssey through a new world of imagination, discovery and possibility.

I would highly recommend seeing Avatar before seeing TORUK.  I haven’t seen the movie, and I think some aspects of the live show were lost on me.  It did, however, make me want to watch the movie!
