Kiddie cooking day at Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co.

A couple of weeks ago Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co. hosted a bunch of us bloggers and our kidlets for a morning of cooking fun.  I was especially excited about this opportunity, because cooking with Portia is something I don't do a lot of and I knew she would love it! We spent the morning making four difference recipes which the kids all loved! We started with a simple (and delicious) guacamole.  The wee ones got to cut the avocados and mango and mush them in their bowls.  It was great seeing them all getting right in there.  It was truly hands-on and the munchkins got to do every step of the preparation which was really fun for them!   Next up, the kids made a healthy alternative to lemonade.  With freshly squeezed lemons and maple syrup instead of sugar, you … [Continue reading...]

Valentine’s colour matching game for toddlers

IMG_7867

I was perusing one of my favourite blogs, No Time For Flash Cards, when I saw this great little activity for wee ones. I set it all up for Portia yesterday afternoon and she had some fun with it. I gathered the materials needed: contact paper, coloured markers, heart punch and construction paper. The next step is to mount the contact paper to a wall, sticky side out.  Then, punch all the coloured hearts and draw the rainbow on the contact paper. All there was left to do was wait for Portia to wake up and start sticking the hearts to the rainbow on the wall! We talked about which coloured hearts matched with which colours on the rainbow and Portia happily stuck the hearts to the wall.  The nice thing about the contact paper is that we could move the hearts around after … [Continue reading...]

Toddler Valentine activity

IMG_7692

I know Valentine's Day is still a few weeks away, but I always feel kind of sad when Christmas and New Year's are over, so I decided to start filling the void early! Here is a quick and easy to prep toddler activity that I put together for Portia the other day. All you need is: -construction paper cut into a big heart (in the colour of your choice) -paper baking cups -stickers -glue Portia liked the little foam stickers the best and actually was more interested in putting them on her face than on the paper, but she had fun regardless and that's the whole point!  There are so many other things you could add to make the heart more detailed: chalk, glitter glue, sparkles etc., but seeing as 'crafting' lasts for anywhere from 5-10 minutes with Portia, I thought I would … [Continue reading...]

Lonsdale Quay: The perfect place to spend a chilly morning with the fam

lonsdale-quay

If your kids are like our toddler, there is no such thing as a lazy Saturday/Sunday hanging out around the house all morning.  We need to get out in the morning (and the earlier the better!). As a result, we are always looking for new ideas of where to go and what to see.  The Vancouver Aquarium is, of course, the favourite, but sometimes it is nice to stay a little closer to home as well. Last weekend, my husband and I took Portia to Lonsdale Quay for our morning outing.  I am not sure why, but we have never taken her there and it is such a great space for kids! Wandering through the food court is entertainment in and of itself, but the Kids' Alley upstairs?!  Jackpot! We started with a fresh bowl of hot soup from the Soup Meister.  Portia sat facing the glass elevator … [Continue reading...]

Felt board fun: A great indoor activity for kids!

felt board

I had two weeks off work over the Christmas/New Year's holiday season which gave me some time to get some projects going that I had been wanting to tackle for quite a while. One of my goals for the break was to make a felt board for Portia to play with.  I got the board itself put together thanks to Mama Papa Bubba's tutorial, but I hadn't yet created anything for Portia to actually stick to the board until last week. I have some friends that made beautiful Christmas tree boards for their toddlers to decorate over and over again.  Seeing as we had finally put away all of our Christmas decorations, I needed a new idea, so I hit up the never-disappointing Etsy.com for some inspiration.  I wanted to find some printable patterns that would save me some time and effort of having to draw … [Continue reading...]

3 fun Christmas card activities for your toddler/preschooler

IMG_7523

It is hard to believe that Christmas has come and gone! This time of the year often feels like a blur, but this year it seemed like even more of a whirlwind! I am starting to look around at our house and all of the Christmas decorations that now look a little 'clutter-ish' somehow.  We usually leave our tree up and all of the decorations out until after New Years, but I am thinking I might start packing away some of the smaller items this weekend already. I never got around to sending out our annual family card, for which I apologize greatly to those who normally receive them :)  We were, however, lucky enough to have received so many beautiful cards this year from family and friends! What I normally do at the end of the holiday season is to file all the cards away in our filing … [Continue reading...]

I have been spending an abnormal amount of time these days checking out Holiday Gift Guides on some of my favourite blogs. (On that note, if you haven't already checked out A Cup of Jo's Gift Guides, you really should!) While reading through a list compiled by a fellow Vancouver mom blogger, Melissa Carr of The Thirties Grind, I stumbled across the most amazing idea for toddlers/preschoolers EVER! It's called Sparked and here is why it is so ingenious! Sparked is about giving children the opportunity to discover, create, explore, and learn. Our activities are designed to develop basic skills, inspire creativity and nurture children’s naturally occurring instinct to get involved and be inquisitive. Our products are not ‘paint by number’; instead they are open-ended, … [Continue reading...]
