A Cleansing Experience
Being a Chef and personal trainer, nutrition has been coming up a lot lately. I have never tried a cleanse. I try to eat healthy but I love my food!
Last week my wife an I decided to take the plunge and try out a 7 day cleanse!
We decided to go with something manageable for our lifestyle. We both workout a lot and have two active little boys, so juice for 7 days was not going to work for us. We called our local health store and got some advice. They put together a plan for us that was easy on the budget and allowed us to eat dinner with our kids as a family still, which is something that is very important in our household.
The cleanse started with a protein/detox shake in the morning. It was pea based protein with lots of other organic roots and herbs that I would probably never have introduced to my body if not for the shake. This was the worst part of the day! It was the most painful thing I have had to drink, and I tried everything to make it taste good.
From there it was clean eating; no dairy, gluten, red meat, sugar or caffeine. We were encouraged to eat lots of nuts, vegetables, fruit and water. Lunch was a protein shake (but one I made from the vanilla whey powder I have) chia seeds and fresh fruit. Far more palatable! The only modification from my daily shake was switching the milk for water. Dinner consisted of grilled chicken or fish and salad or steamed veggies. There was lots of healthy snacking during the day, but I definitely looked forward to my last meal each night!
Overall the first 2 days were hard. I had to lean on my wife for support, but it was smooth sailing from there. In the end I realized how much unnecessary “junk” I put into my body, and even though I have finished the cleanse, it has been easy not to get back into some of my old habits. I lost 8 lbs in one week, and to be honest I feel amazing!
I would recommend a cleanse to anyone who wants to clean up their diet, but keep in mind it’s not a weight-loss tool. Any weight that comes off that quickly will make its way back just as fast.
Some tips for choosing the right type of cleanse: Try to find one that compliments your lifestyle. If you’re hungry and frustrated for a week straight, it’s not going to help anything and it’s probably not the right cleanse for you. Also, remember that your body needs calories to function. Cutting down too much will just make you grumpy and tired!
have a group of friends you would like to train with privately in the comfort of your home, that can be arranged as well.
